After months of speculation, the ax could soon fall: Migros should sell its subsidiary Hotelplan to the Dertour group, reveals the Sunday newspaperwhich invokes sources close to the matter. The orange giant would like to announce the transaction before Christmas. In Germany, Dertour is number two in the sector behind Tui. In Switzerland too, the group is a major player, since it manages the Kuoni and Helvetic Tours brands. The company employs around 950 people there and manages around 70 agencies.
As part of a vast restructuring, Migros announced at the beginning of February its intention to sell Hotelplan, Switzerland’s number one travel company, in order to refocus on its core business. The company was created in 1935 by its founder, Gottlieb Duttweiler, with the mission of “helping a Swiss hotel industry close to collapse and allowing everyone to go on vacation”. Hotelplan has long been considered a foreign body in the Migros galaxy. For years, rumors had been swirling about a possible sale, depending on the subsidiary’s performance.
