With the cost of living continuing to rise – between rent and grocery shopping – every little bit counts. Good news: Old Age Security (OAS) pension payments offered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) could ease the financial burden for many people in 2025 – check if you can qualify for this help.
Paid every month, this federal benefit can make a real difference for a large part of the population, particularly in the face of galloping inflation. Payments are accessible from a certain age and, in some cases, registration is automatic after filing your tax return.
If you have not yet filed your income tax return for 2023, do so without delay to avoid fees and maximize your chances of receiving this assistance. It is also important to check whether your personal or family financial situation meets the criteria. You can do this verification via My Account for individuals from the CRA.
Who can benefit from the Old Age Security pension?
This financial assistance is aimed at people aged 65 and over. The first OAS payment is made during the month following the 65th birthday, which marks the start of eligibility for the program, or on the specific date chosen by the latter. A request can also be made from the age of 64.
Both the population still employed and those who have never held a job can be entitled to this pension. In addition, it is necessary to have lived in Canadafor at least 10 years, since the age of 18. Those living outside the countrymust for their part have remained in the territory for at least 20 years since the age of majority.
How much can I receive with Old Age Security?
Until the end of 2024, people aged 65 to 74 eligible for the Old Age Security program can receive up to $727.67 per month. The amount they can benefit from is determined based on their 2023 net annual income – which must not have exceeded $148,451.
The population aged 75 or over can receive a monthly amount of up to $800.44 depending on the income earned in 2023 – or approximately $9,600 on an annual basis. Please note that people who received more than $154,196 last year are not entitled to this financial assistance.
-At the time of writing, the new payment caps for 2025 have not yet been announced. However, the maximum income recovery thresholds have been increased – you can view them here.
However, the CRA has indicated that the OAS reimbursement threshold will be $86,912 for the period July 2024 to June 2025 (income earned in 2023) and $90,997 for the period July 2025 to June 2026 (amounts affected in 2024). This means that beneficiaries whose income is higher than these amounts will have to repay part or all of their pension.
