End of the ball for scrappage bonuses and ZFE bonuses. In the interest of savings, these two devices have just been officially abolished by decree. They made it possible to obtain discounts for the purchase of new cars.

Two bonuses to buy new cars removed

The government is taking an important turn in terms of automobile and environmental policy: the elimination of scrappage bonuses and ZFE (Low Emission Zone) bonuses since December 2, 2024. This change has just been confirmed by a decree. Thus, the State decides to drastically reduce the budget allocated to aid for the purchase of new cars.

The total amount goes from 1.5 billion euros in 2024 to only 700 million euros in 2025. This reduction comes as part of a search for savings, while expenses linked to premiums have far exceeded initial forecasts. The government therefore chooses to favor the ecological bonusseen as more strategic to support sales of electric vehicles. According to the decree, the abolition of scrappage bonuses and ZFE bonuses is part of in a logic of optimization of resources.

Devices losing speed

The scrappage bonus, once popular, had already seen its use decline. Initially intended to encourage the energy transition by replacing old vehicles with cleaner models, it was no longer as attractive. At the same time, the ZFE bonus, designed to encourage compliance with the regulations of low-emission zones, suffers from a mixed perception among the French. These deletions are also accompanied by the end of conversion surcharges, which could reach up to €3,000.

For motorists, the sudden end of these bonuses can be synonymous with a hard blow. Those who had planned purchases in 2025 will have to turn to the only remaining aid, such as the ecological bonus. The latter remains available but is now less generous, capping often €5,000 for the purchase of an electric vehicle.
