Marketplaces to market content intended to train AI

The start-up Trainspot has just launched a marketplace allowing creators to monetize their content and developers of AI models to acquire training data without risk. The Cloudflare company also plans to launch such a marketplace.

At the end of September, connectivity specialist Cloudflare launched a series of tools to help websites control how AI models use their content for training purposes. The kit notably offers an easy way to block content extractors (crawlers) operated by AI providers on a given site, as well as an audit tool to visualize their activity, a useful feature in particular for websites which have concluded agreements with AI providers.

At the same time, Cloudflare announced its plan to add a marketplace to its kit. Beyond monitoring the activity of AI crawlers, website owners will be able to set a price for all or part of the content on their site, and invoice the AI providers who use them. Cloudflare takes care of the entire process.

While more and more creators are worried about the unexpected exploitation of their content, and AI providers are thirsty for specialized, recent and, above all, human-created content, the idea of a marketplace has merit. what to be interested in. Particularly for “small” websites and publishers, who cannot negotiate deals with AI giants.

Trainspot: a first pioneering marketplace

At the project stage at Cloudflare, the marketplace concept is already operational at Trainspot. The Californian start-up launched its open marketplace for AI training data at the end of October. The platform allows developers to search for and acquire specialized content and datasets directly from their rights holders, and therefore without fear of future lawsuits. On the other hand, content creators – YouTubers, photographers, editors and other IT developers – can monetize their productions and better protect their copyright. Currently the platform only offers around ten sources…

Ron Palmeri, CEO of Trainspot, explains that AI needs a better business model than mass data theft: “The move-fast-and-break-things era of AI does not is more than a bad memory. We establish property rights over learning data and create an environment conducive to the development of the AI economy. Our platform gives individuals and businesses a way to license their data on their terms and AI developers of all sizes a powerful tool to discover, aggregate and license the data they need. For both parties, the experience is as simple as listing and purchasing on eBay.
