The installation of Linky meters is a success, at least for Enedis. In a report unveiled this Thursday, the Court of Auditors draws up a more than positive assessment of the operation of deploying connected meters. Despite some reluctance on the part of the general public, the massive installation of green boxes was carried out “on time and at a lower cost than initially forecast“. With 18% economycarried out in particular on the purchases and installation of meters, the electricity network manager saved 880 million euros, for a final bill of “only”4.6 billion euros.
No help for users
If you thought that this good financial news would push Enedis to make a commercial gesture for its users, prepare to be disappointed. The Linky meter installation program, as profitable as it is for Enedis, will “subject to no adjustment“, specifies the Court of Auditors, for the simple reason that its financing is “derogation from the usual remuneration of Enedis' regulated assets“.
The fact remains that the installation of green boxes wants to establish itself as a good news for everyone. Thus, the deployment of Linky meters has led to a reduction in reading costs and small interventions, which can now be carried out remotely. Enough to reduce the final bill for the consumer, indicates the Court: “A part of these gains was passed on to consumers through the reduction in the cost of certain services.“.
Linky also contributes to the stability of the electricity network by participating in the balance between electricity supply and demand during periods of tension, as was the case during the winter of 2022-2023.
Better network stability, better room for maneuver in the event of intervention for minor anomalies, the promise behind Linky meters remains the same. This winter again, the modularity of the system should once again make it possible to avoid widespread outages in the event of consumption peaks.
Still a disappointing outcome?
The installation of Linky meters is a success, with 37.2 million green boxes installed in France, for total coverage estimated at 94% of households. However, the general assessment remains disappointing in terms of energy control and demand, recalls the Court of Auditors. Fraud represents a significant shortfall, to the point that the network manager plans to double its control capacities from next year. At the same time, the increase in the price of electricity since 2022 has reduced the manager's profits.
