Sovereignist circles close to the UDC have launched a popular initiative to define neutrality precisely

The initiators want to prevent Switzerland from resuming sanctions like those against Russia, the aggressor of Ukraine, in the future.

The Federal Council rejects the text and argues with the need to be able to remain flexible to safeguard the interests of the country
Switzerland applies its neutrality flexibly, and the Federal Council does not want to deviate from this practice. He repeated it unequivocally this Wednesday by refusing the popular initiative from sovereignist circles “Safeguard Swiss neutrality (neutrality initiative)”. Close to the nationalist UDC, and counting certain elected officials from this party in their committee, the initiators launched their text because of the war in Ukraine. Angry that the Confederation was resuming European Union sanctions against the Russian invader, they saw it as a serious breach of neutrality.
They now want to prohibit membership in a military alliance (NATO is primarily targeted), and prohibit sanctions against any state involved in an armed conflict. Only sanctions issued by the UN would remain permitted, as well as measures preventing the circumvention, via Switzerland, of sanctions taken by other countries. Furthermore, the Swiss army could only cooperate with a military alliance to protect itself against a direct attack.
