Telecom Namibia signs new network modernization agreement

(Agence Ecofin) – The telecoms operator is increasing investments and partnerships to improve its network and meet growing demand on the national market. Last week it signed a partnership agreement with Huawei.

State-owned Telecom Namibia (TN) announced on Tuesday June 25 a partnership agreement with a joint venture formed by mobile technology companies ZTE and Huafull. The three-year collaboration will focus in particular on the modernization and extension of the coverage of the telecoms operator’s infrastructure.

« Under the terms of the agreement, Telecom Namibia will purchase state-of-the-art mobile radio access equipment from the joint venture ZTE Corporation and Huafull International Limited to strengthen the capacity and coverage of its mobile network throughout the country, including in previously underserved areas. This partnership will facilitate the deployment of advanced mobile radio access technologies such as 4G, 4.5G and 5G“, TN said in a statement.

This new agreement comes a week after Telecom Namibia signed a similar partnership agreement with Huawei. The initiative is part of the actions undertaken by the telecoms company to modernize its network and improve its coverage in accordance with its Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP) 2027. The company announced in July 2022 that it would invest 2.3 billion Namibian dollars ($126.5 million) in its fixed and mobile network infrastructure in five years.

Investments in network coverage and quality are expected to enable Telecom Namibia to improve the quality of its services and reach thousands more people. The company will thus be able to strengthen its competitiveness and increase its market share, particularly in the mobile segment. The historic operator claims around 620,000 subscribers, compared to 2.5 million for its main competitor MTC.
