Another particularity: its ability to stop in no time. “It is the accelerator which controls the reactor. If we stop the accelerator, in one microsecond, the reactor stops“, comments Hamid Aït Abderrahim, director of the Myrrha project. The system is therefore more secure. But that’s not all: it also innovates through its ability to drastically reduce the volume and lifespan of nuclear waste. According to the director of the project, the radiotoxicity of nuclear waste is thus reduced from 300,000 years to 300 years.

The end of the first phase of Myrrha is scheduled for 2027. Ultimately, Hamid Aït Abderrahim hopes to make MYRRHA a pioneering research center in the fight against cancer. “For the treatment of cancer by radiotherapy, we need new radioisotopes… And especially the number of increasingly young patients, it is an extraordinary motivation for our researchers, to say to ourselves ‘we can participate in the effort‘”, he comments.

The project is partly financed by the government and also supported by Europe. Federal Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen) has been involved in monitoring MYRRHA for several years. “The question is whether this reactor will meet the expectations placed on it“, declared the minister on Tuesday. “With this project, our country remains a pioneer in nuclear research, with an emphasis on medical applications.
