Before each boarding, plane crews call passengers who have checked in but have not yet shown up. In this case, it is difficult to imagine that passengers could be forgotten. Even more so when they are waiting on the tarmac.

Yet this is what happened to Liz Weir, a writer from Belfast (United Kingdom), reports The Independent. Suffering from heart disease, she boarded as a person with a disability when she took the plane. Friday June 21, she took an easyJet flight to Edinburgh to give a conference.

“They knew we were there”

Departure was scheduled for 1 p.m. and she was accompanied by two passengers in wheelchairs. They were taken to the tarmac where they were to board the plane last. But, after all the passengers had boarded, the pilot signaled to them that they could not follow them.

A few minutes later, the plane took off… without the three passengers. “I was distraught because I was supposed to give a talk and people paid for their tickets and I missed it. They were sitting around waiting for me and I couldn’t get there in time.”

For the passenger, the situation is incomprehensible: “I don’t know who is responsible but I just wish the situation wouldn’t happen again. We always tell ourselves that they won’t forget us, but that’s what they did, and they even left with our luggage we were checked in, they checked our boarding passes, they knew we were there…”

“Really sorry”

According to Belfast Airport, it is the airline that is to blame. EasyJet also reacted: “We are truly sorry that flight EZY55 between Belfast and Edinburgh on Friday June 21 took off without three passengers who were accompanied by the airport’s special assistance provider. We have spoken urgently with the provider and our team ground assistance in order to understand the reasons for this situation.”

The company assures that the three passengers were then taken care of by giving them refreshments to wait for the next flight to Belfast. Compensation is also provided.
