Airlines adopt Apple AirTags to find baggage

Apple partners with airlines to make baggage tracking easier with AirTags. Passengers can thus securely share the location of their lost suitcases with the customer services of several companies including Swiss.

Passengers will be able to help airlines find their suitcases using Apple AirTags. Used by some for some time now to track their luggage in case it gets lost during the flight, these geolocation devices are now integrated into the systems of several airlines. A new feature enabled by Apple, which recently introduced “Share Item Location”, an iOS feature that allows you to securely share the location of AirTags with third parties.

Apple worked directly with partner airlines. Access to each geolocation link will be limited to a small number of people, and recipients will need to authenticate to view the link, either through their Apple account or the partner’s email address.

In the coming months, more than 15 airlines will begin accepting Find My item contact information as part of their customer service process to locate misdirected or delayed baggage. This is the case for Swiss, but also for Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, United, Virgin Atlantic, and Vueling. Other companies will be added gradually, according to Apple’s press release.

Furthermore, SITA, the Geneva-based International Aeronautical Telecommunications Company, is integrating support for this functionality into WorldTracer, a system used by more than 500 airlines and thousands of airports to manage lost baggage.
