In Belgium, unpleasant surprise for motorists who want to go electric

It’s official: Flanders will eliminate subsidies for electric vehicles sooner than expected. The bonus will end on November 22, 2024. There are therefore only a few days left for motorists wishing to go electric to benefit from this government boost.

By offering purchase assistance of 5,000 euros for new electric cars (and 3,000 euros for used models), the Flemish government did not expect such enthusiasm. As in Italy, Belgian motorists rushed to their dealership to place orders. But this enthusiasm unfortunately got the better of the subsidies offered by Flanders.

Bonus ends on November 22, 2024 in Flanders

In fact, the bonus will be removed earlier than expected. It will officially end on November 22, 2024. As of mid-October, 11,590 grants had been requested, including 9,736 for new cars and 1,854 for used models. The aid in question has therefore already cost the Flemish provincial treasury around 50 million euros. This is 2.5 times more than the 20 million euros originally planned.

Reintroduced in February 2024, the purchase bonus will therefore not last long. However, Flanders initially wanted to grant this bonus to electric cars during the years 2025 and 2026. The new government that came to power in the summer of 2024 finally decided to close the floodgates at the end of the year. But as the coffers are empty, the bonus will end within a few days.

Motorists who want to buy an electric car will have to act quickly. The Flemings have less than two weeks left to benefit from government aid. In , we do not expect a total elimination but rather a reduction in the bonus. For the moment, the grant granted is still 4,000 euros (or 7,000 euros for the less well-off). However, it could increase to 3,000 euros or even less.
