Why will the election of Donald Trump give the boss of Apple a cold sweat?

The re-election of Donald Trump has major geopolitical consequences all over the world. It will also have significant repercussions in the world of Tech. The protectionist promises of the new president are indeed giving Apple a cold sweat. Let's take stock.

A very worrying program for Apple

On paper, Tim Cook logically congratulated the Republican candidate for his victory this Wednesday. However, it probably did not escape his notice that the new leader announced customs tariffs of 10% on all imported products and 60% on Chinese items.

Such a measure would clearly be harmful for the Apple brand. Quoted by Business InsiderJacob Channel, economist at LendingTree, doesn't beat around the bush: “If you think your iPhone is expensive today, it's probably going to get a lot more expensive if the company that makes it faces a 60% tariff on everything it imports from China”.

Our colleagues also point out major facts, notably that China accounts for 17% of the apple brand's overall sales in 2024, or $67 billion. However, the Middle Kingdom will certainly not let this happen if Donald Trump puts his plan into action and could in turn decide to overtax American products. Clearly, Apple would lose on all fronts.

The economic media, however, highlights news that could bring some comfort to the hearts of Tim Cook and other leaders of the technology company. Indeed, while Apple is facing an antitrust trial in the United States, it is quite possible that the new Trump government will be much more lenient on this issue.

Tim Cook and Donald Trump know each other well

As a reminder, Donald Trump himself reported personal exchanges with Tim Cook. The latter would have in fact contacted him to discuss the recent fines imposed by the European Union on Apple. The Republican then assured him: “I’m not going to let them take advantage of our businesses – that’s not going to happen, you know”. An aggressive posture which does not bode well for trade relations between America and Europe. For more information, do not hesitate to consult our previous article here.

What to remember:

  • Tim Cook congratulated Donald Trump on his election
  • Its protectionist program could harm Apple's interests
  • The apple brand can, however, hope for more lenient treatment for its antitrust trial
