Artificial intelligence is taking hold at Disney. The American company, which has been in crisis for several years already, hopes to derive economic and technological advantages by further integrating AI into its operations.
Mickey’s House hasn’t been in the best shape for a few years. The fault of an economic crisis which inevitably had an impact on the entertainment sectorbut also to questionable strategies applied by his former boss, Bob Chapek, fired in 2022. Since the return of Bob Iger at the head of the group, The Walt Disney Company has had to make certain brutal decisions, such as a change of direction for Disney+but also hundreds of layoffs in its various branches.
A strategic review using AI
Bob Iger made no secret that the objective for the company was now to rationalize costs. In other words, focus on what works and leave the rest aside. Since artificial intelligence is now a hit almost everywhere, Disney couldn’t miss it.
Reuters recently revealed that The Walt Disney Company had just set up a new team intended to supervise internal projects concerning AI, but also mixed reality. The information was confirmed by Disney, which even agreed to say more: it is Jamie Voris, currently technological director of the studios, who will take the lead of this new team.
Voris is already used to this type of exercise. Recently, he oversaw the development of the Disney+ application for the Apple Vision Pro headset. Mixed reality is therefore already in its sights, it remains to be seen what happens to AI.
The desire to no longer be late
“The pace and scope of advances in artificial intelligence and mixed reality are profound, and will continue to impact consumer experiences, creative efforts, and our business for years to come.”said Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, in a statement. “It is therefore essential that Disney explores the exciting opportunities and navigates the potential risks. »
Disney has already tried its hand at generative AI recently, notably through its Marvel Studios branch : the credits of the series Secret Invasion containedillustrations generated using AI, which was the subject of strong criticism at the time, since the studio had then been accused of saving pennies by depriving real artists of their work.
Still according to Reuters, Disney is very interested in AI to lower the production costs of its films and series, but also for the new attractions in its parks. A vision of the industry which inevitably gets people talking in Hollywood, where fears around these new technologies were at the heart of the long strike which took place there last year. But When it comes to saving money, anything seems possible.
