an operator announces having blocked 23.4 million fraudulent messages in one year!

Telecom operator Telenet blocked 23.4 million phishing messages in one year, or an average of 45 fraudulent messages per minute, it said on Tuesday.

After “phishing”, watch out for “qishing”: the new technique of computer scammers

Since last year, the company has been using a new platform called SpamShield to fight against “smishers”, scammers who practice phishing through SMS. Proximus uses a similar system.

The majority of these messages, or 95%, come from a Belgian mobile phone number. “Often, the messages no longer contain a link, but a Belgian telephone number that the victims call. At the other end of the line, they are asked to carry out certain transactions on a fake site,” explains Telenet.

The telco is now using AI to unmask scammers and detect fraudulent messages, but scammers are also using AI to improve their messages.
