Telecom operator Telenet blocked 23.4 million phishing messages in one year, or an average of 45 fraudulent messages per minute, it said on Tuesday.
After “phishing”, watch out for “qishing”: the new technique of computer scammers
Since last year, the company has been using a new platform called SpamShield to fight against “smishers”, scammers who practice phishing through SMS. Proximus uses a similar system.
The majority of these messages, or 95%, come from a Belgian mobile phone number. “Often, the messages no longer contain a link, but a Belgian telephone number that the victims call. At the other end of the line, they are asked to carry out certain transactions on a fake site,” explains Telenet.
