The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MétéoSuisse) and the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) have signed a framework contract aimed at using artificial intelligence. The goal is to develop advanced methods for data collection, weather forecasting and climate understanding.

Over the next four years, MeteoSwiss and the National Data Science Research Infrastructure (SDSC) will collaborate to develop and implement machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), says a press release common published Monday.

MeteoSwiss has been observing weather and climate for more than 160 years and has used a high-resolution weather forecast model in the Alps region for several decades. This trove of data has immense potential for various AI applications.

Improvements are expected across the entire value creation chain. This ranges from improving short-range forecasts to forecasting the development of storms in the coming hours to increasing the accuracy of weather forecasts for the next ten days.

Other possible developments could be the more automated use of new measurement techniques and the quality control of measurements. AI also makes it possible to increase the level of detail of observation of past climate, but also for future climate.

These analyzes are an essential basis for adaptation to climate change. They describe the potential of wind energy or photovoltaics or help to assess the risk of flooding, MeteoSwiss further notes.
