A heavy goods vehicle of around twenty tonnes consumes almost 30 liters/100 kilometers, and almost 35 liters/100 kilometers when it is twice the weight. To reduce theecological footprintecological footprint and economical, rather than electrifying trucks, the Kenworth company sought to increase the efficiency of Diesel engines. The result: a futuristic-looking SuperTruck 2, unveiled in Las VegasVegas during an exhibition on the “greening” of means of transport. The SuperTruck 2 is the result of six years of development, initiated by the US Department ofenergyenergy (or DOE for Department of Energy’s)). The principle was to improve the efficiency of freight transport, without abandoning Diesel. Ultimately, the consumption of the SuperTruck 2 is reduced to 18.4 liters/100 kilometers. To achieve this, the firm started with an old concept, the 2009 T660 which was at the time the most fuel-efficient truck.

With the new model, the weight has been reduced by 3,175 kilos for a massmass total of 11,839 kilos. As can be seen in the photos, efforts have also been focused on the aerodynamics of the vehicle. The materials have been chosen to reduce weight and the tires benefit from a low resistanceresistance rolling. The machine looks more like the tractor of a fast train than a truck with its low skirts, its body slope and its hidden wheels. The mirrors have disappeared in favor of cameras placed at the end of the fins and which benefit from vision nocturnalnocturnal.

55.7% efficiency for the engine

The height of the truck can be adapted to the type of road used. On a highway, it is therefore possible to lower it as close to the road as possible to reduce drag. This would be lowered by 48% according to the designer. As for the engine, the Diesel is a PACCAR MX-11 equipped with a TX-12 automatic transmission. The motorization is associated with a generatorgenerator electric 48 voltsvolts to create a set hybridhybrid. Braking also allows energy to be recovered to recharge the batteries. The hybrid side attracts attention, because rather than draining engine power to operate the steering, the cooling system or even the heating and air conditionerair conditionerenergy is drawn from the batteries lithiumlithium.

In the end, with this process, the air conditioning alone allows 80 hp to be kept for driving. According to Kenworth, engine efficiency peaks at 55.7%. This does not have theairair you’re welcome, but currently the most efficient engines peak at around 47% efficiency.
