A No Frills grocery store could soon open its doors in Caraquet

The No Frills chain, owned by Canadian food giant Loblaw, could soon set up shop in Caraquet… if all goes well.

No Frills would take up residence at the beginning of next year at the Place Saint-Pierre shopping center, on the boulevard of the same name, not far from Sainte-Anne-du-Bocage.

The manager of Place Saint-Pierre, Aline Gionet, explained to Acadie Nouvelle on Tuesday by telephone that discussions between the owners of the commercial hub and the Loblaw company are very advanced.

“An agreement is in the works, but until it is signed, we are not 100% sure, but there is a good chance that it will happen.”

It is still too early to make an official announcement, continued Ms. Gionet, but if all goes as planned the development work could be undertaken with a view to opening in January or February.

If this project comes to fruition, it would mean the return of a major grocery store to Place Saint-Pierre. Until the mid-1990s, the Save-Easy chain occupied this part of the building where the Dollarama store is located today.

The first No Frills opened in 1978 in East York, near Toronto. Today, this chain has more than 250 stores across the country.

No Frills, as well as the Superstore chain, are owned by Loblaw, which itself is a division of George Weston Ltd.

Consumers in Caraquet are currently served by two grocery stores: Coop IGA and Épicerie Pointe-Rocheuse.
