The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) recently published its quarterly report for the first quarter of 2024, highlighting significant trends in the Moroccan telecommunications sector. The data reveals a continued and sustained expansion of mobile Internet and fiber optics, strengthening Morocco’s positioning in the global digital landscape.

The number of mobile Internet subscribers reached 35.61 million, an annual increase of 7.23%. This growth is largely explained by the increase in 4G users, which now stands at 31.86 million, up 3.39 million from the previous year. Overall, the number of Internet subscribers stands at 38.3 million, recording an increase of 7.46%, bringing the penetration rate to 103.45%. The FTTH (optical fiber) Internet segment saw a remarkable growth of 35%, reaching 918,579 subscribers.

The mobile sector is also showing signs of robust growth. The number of subscribers exceeds 55 million, including more than 48 million prepaid, which represents an annual increase of 4.36% and a penetration rate greater than 149%.

However, mobile outgoing traffic decreased by 5.35% compared to the same period of the previous year, totaling 11.78 billion minutes in the first quarter of 2024. The average monthly outgoing usage per subscriber also decreased. fell 10.4% year-on-year, standing at 706 minutes at the end of March. This decline can be attributed to the growing use of over-the-top (OTT) applications such as Skype and WhatsApp, which offer cheaper alternatives to phone calls over the Internet.

The number of SMS messages sent during the first quarter reached 455 million, marking an annual contraction of 5.5%. Regarding the portability of mobile numbers, allowing subscribers to change operator while keeping their number, 1,355,592 numbers were ported, representing an annual increase of 13.71%.

The fixed telephone sector is not left out. The number of subscribers reached 2.95 million, recording an annual increase of 9.33%. However, outgoing fixed line traffic fell by 11.72%, amounting to 299 million minutes, with an average monthly traffic per subscriber of 344 minutes. The number of successful ports of fixed numbers reached 75,432 at the end of March, showing an annual increase of 18.5%.

The number of subscribers to “business data links” also saw a slight increase of 2.12%, reaching 38,356 subscribers. Furthermore, the number of domain names registered in Morocco reached 120,332 at the end of March 2024, marking an increase of more than 5%.
