Bank in Luxembourg: ING closes the accounts of many customers “without explanation”

“When I checked my accounts on Friday, I was surprised to discover that my account was going to be closed. I couldn’t believe it,” says David*. He is one of the many customers whose accounts ING has decided to close. “The most incredible thing is that I received no mail, no calls. I came across a message by chance with no explanation. I tried to contact an advisor, he simply told me to send an email, but there was no response. It’s very brutal.”

Customers learned of the impending termination of their account through the app or by viewing online transactions. “After careful review of our service offering, we have regretfully decided to close your accounts, including your Visa account, very soon,” indicates a terse message. Martine* was only told that the decision “was irrevocable”, pending “a registered letter at the end of June”.

David is not happy with the idea of the steps that await him: “I have to notify my employer about the salary, then the CNS, the electricity, Internet and telephone suppliers. I’m bound to forget one.” He believes that the bank “could have warned earlier to help anticipate the necessary changes”.

For Célia*, it’s the straw that broke the camel’s back. “I absolutely have to change everything. Immediately, I went to the ING agency to recover my funds,” she explains. But another bank, “overwhelmed” by future ex-ING clients, then refused to open a new account. The management of the ING bank does not wish to communicate for the moment and affirms that it will give a collective response within a few days.
