the roadster of your dreams for this summer

The driving season is officially underway as we test Porsche’s mid-engined maestro, the 718 Boxster. Discover our impressions of this iconic roadster, the perfect companion for enjoying sunny days.

A convertible made for summer

There are a thousand and one ways to mark the start of summer. The first time the thermometer exceeds 25°C. The first dip in the pool. Or a game of golf on a sunny afternoon, a seasonal beer in hand. For me, the summer of 2024 began on Thursday at 9:07 p.m. Eastern, when I left the house behind the wheel of the Porsche 718 Boxstertop down, for a nighttime trip in the still warm air.

Eleven minutes after sunset, the Boxster Style Edition – clad in metallic blue paint and perched on shiny white wheels – proved too tempting. It is the quintessence of the roadster, with perfectly balanced handling and a style that is both athletic and harmonious. The 718 is an exercise in good taste and balance, offering ultra-precise steering, biting brakes and more than enough 300 hp to power through the darkness.

An intoxicating soundtrack

If the driver engagement and elegant look are present, this is the symphony of the 4-cylinder boxer 2.0 and its thunderous exhaust which creates a real auditory sensation. Like this Porsche that maintains its balance and control in almost every situation, my mind went completely blank behind the wheel.

Head to Woodward Avenue, the epicenter of summer car culture and nighttime strolls. A bro driving a Ram TRX felt the need to pass me loudly, followed by a Ferrari. An unlikely duo speeding towards downtown Birmingham.

Pleasure at every red light

Back north, I used every red light as an excuse to mash the accelerator, cautiously easing off around 80 or 90 km/h, the speed limit in this posh suburb. A childish game. Red fire. Green light. Stuff the mushroom. The rev counter panics. Oops, already 80 – better take your foot off – followed by crackling and backfiring. Porsche managed to give the 718 the right sound.

Although nostalgic for the 6-speed manual gearbox, the 7-speed PDK turned out to be very convincing. It forms such a harmonious duo with the 4 cylinder that I could almost check this option at €3,210.

A special retro series

The Style Edition features 20-inch white rims, “Porsche” logos written in full and “Boxster” embossed on the fabric hood. An assumed neo-retro look, reminiscent of the 80s and 90s when Porsche had a more fun and less clinical image. This Boxster is approaching €95,000, almost the price of a 911. However, at this precise moment, I prefer the dynamics offered by the central engine of the 718.

After 10 p.m., the coolness sets in and my summer welcome turns to the return of spring. The 718 is so smooth and precise that I pass my house twice. It’s hard to stop driving a roadster during such a fleeting season. Finally, the Springsteen concert I’m listening to slows down the pace. It’s time to go home.

Summer is just beginning, and the Porsche 718 Boxster promises to be the ideal partner to enjoy the season. With its perfect balance between performance, driving pleasure and timeless look, it has everything you need to brighten up your journeys. So, are you ready to put the top down? Summary
