A homeless man who was in a garbage container ended up in a garbage truck Monday morning. The tragedy was narrowly avoided: the man, still alive, had no injuries.

Octave, 33, was in a deep sleep when he was suddenly awakened by a debris truck coming to empty the container. He would have glided into the back of the truck.

He miraculously escaped with just one small bandage on his leg.

“I was catapulted into the truck, I did a […] pirouette and I fell a little on my neck, but in the waste, it cushioned the shock,” he explained to TVA Nouvelles.

“I said to myself ‘I have to get out of there, I have to do [quelque chose]”.”

He thus left the dangerous zone where the embers were located. He then tried to escape the truck, but the edge was too slippery. From his cabin, the driver finally saw movement on the surveillance camera in his dumpster, stopped and helped Octave get out of his unfortunate position. He told her that he is not the first this has happened to. “He told me I was the sixth in his career.”

Octave normally avoids these dumpsters to sleep. He is a regular at the Le Havre resource run by Karine Dahan. “He is absolutely not blocked from our services, he has access to them at all times and he knows it. He does inn-outs very regularly.”

At the Point de rue organization, Philippe Malchelosse and his team are already trying to make homeless people aware of the dangers that these garbage containers represent. “There are plenty of others who take risks. Someone who lies down in a parking lot next to a car could be run over. It’s dangerous.”

Homelessness is becoming more and more present in the city center. And to remove pressure on restaurant customers at lunchtime, Point de rue is currently trying to obtain authorization to open its snack bar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “That they are able to have access to a shower, toilet, laundry room, a little respite, a little dish.”

As for Octave, his misadventure gives him the courage to try to take charge of himself. “The good Lord wants to give me a chance to understand something, that I can do something better in my life.”
