A police officer is said to have infiltrated the Federation of Neuchâtel Students (FEN) by posing as a student. For the Neuchâtel police, it is “in no way an infiltration, but a police presence” linked to the occupation of the University and the conflict in the Middle East.

“The Neuchâtel police are observing the various actions taking place at the University, as part of the general public security mission. The objective is to prevent possible excesses between activists from one side or the other” , explained the police spokesperson on Wednesday.

“In this context, Neuchâtel police officers, in civilian clothes or in uniform, regularly visit places where actions are taking place in public spaces. Yesterday, one of our officers found himself in an assembly of the Federation of Neuchâtel Students (FEN) He left the premises at the request of a member of this federation”, he added.

Question asked to the Grand Council

According to Arcinfo, the policeman claimed to be a student and did not want to sign the attendance sheet. He also refused to reveal his identity to find out which faculty he belonged to. Finally he left.

According to the police, “the circumstances in which this agent found himself in this location are the subject of internal clarification,” added the spokesperson. As a question was asked to the Grand Council on this subject, the police will not comment further.

The socialist deputy Hugo Clémence in fact asked a question to the Council of State to find out if the government “endorses this scandalous method” and what reasons justify it. The Council of State will respond during the next session, Wednesday May 29.
