By launching the SUV version of its Yaris in 2021, Toyota had flair. Thanks to its ultra-efficient hybrid engine and its generous volumes, the Yaris Cross quickly established itself as the Japanese brand’s best seller in France. It has sold more than 30,000 copies in France in 2023, behind the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008 and Dacia Duster. Satisfied with the excellent results of its small SUV, the manufacturer has chosen not to touch a single cm2 of its model, as it recently did for the new Yaris. To the eye, this 2024 vintage is strictly the same.

Rather than a proper restyling, Toyota made several adjustments to perfect its copy. The first consists of the implementation of a more powerful hybrid engine of 130 hp compared to 116 hp today. To maintain decent prices, the latter remains available with the entry-level Dynamic finish (€28,200). The new 130 hp version is offered from the second finishing level called Design at €30,200, with the 116 hp version then available at a price of €29,700.

This mechanic retains the same architecture. Namely a 3-cylinder 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol engine with 92 hp Atkinson cycle (92 hp at 5,500 rpm) associated with a transaxle assembly with an electric motor-generator. The power gain is obtained through an increase in the power of the latter and a reconfiguration of the electronics. The cumulative power now reaches 130 hp while the torque gains 30% (i.e. 185 Nm instead of 141). It is also the only version available in 2 and 4 wheel drive.

If nothing changes on the outside. The passenger compartment, on the other hand, has been slightly redesigned with the installation of a flexible material on the lower part of the dashboard, and above all new screens. On the instrument side, the handset measures, depending on the finish, 7 or 12.3 inches (as on our test model) and can be personalized. Although not intuitive, the whole thing is readable and can be controlled without taking your eyes off the road thanks to simple-to-use physical buttons on the left spoke of the steering wheel.

The touchscreen multimedia system (9 or 10.5 inches like here) has also been revised. The image definition is much better and the functionalities appear more modern. On the other hand, it lacks simplicity when it comes to finding your way around certain menus. However, it is very responsive and, if handled while driving, it will prevent us from having to take our eyes off the road for too long. It has wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity. The Yaris Cross also gains remote updates and a digital key (via smartphone) to allow up to five users to get behind the wheel of the vehicle.

This concludes the list of new features introduced. The modern design and quality of presentation still compare well with the leaders in the segment. We also appreciate finding a physical console to adjust the ventilation.

If the space remains just at leg level behind a driver for those over 1m80, the bench seat is comfortable at the side seats, and the loading volume is correct in the 2-wheel drive version with 397 liters available. The 4-wheel drive versions will have to make do with 320 liters.
