The social network X specifies the contours of its new Block function

X, formerly Twitter, has https://twitter.com/XEng/status/1846605254864888180?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1846605254864888180%7Ctwgr%5Efedb0d1b907d859cfc1954b28b68823cc0bff5e6%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.socialmediatoday.com%2Fnews%2Fx-formerly-twitter-dilutes-the-power-of-blocking%2F730113%2F the upcoming implementation of a new operation for the Block function of the social network.

As on most social networks, X allows its users to “block” others: the blocked person can then no longer interact or see messages from the account that blocked them. In the future, a blocked account will still not be able to interact with its blocker – neither “like”, nor replies, nor direct messages – but it will be able to continue reading the latter’s messages.

This development had already been mentioned last year by Elon Musk, the owner of the X platform, who had even https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1692558414105186796 : that the blocking is no longer applied only to direct messages. The social network ultimately opted for an intermediate development, but which remains a notable weakening of a basic functionality for combating harassment.

“A real victory for harassers”estimated the British think tank OpenDemocracy at the end of September, when the project was detailed by X, noting that the blocking function, despite its limits, was a useful tool, particularly for victims of domestic violence.

Shortly after the announcement of this change, Bluesky, a competing social network, experienced an influx of new users, as evidenced by its usage statistics.
