How Continental is helping to shape the mobility of tomorrow

Continental, an emblematic German group in the automotive industry, has evolved to become a world leader with a turnover of 41.4 billion euros and nearly 200,000 employees in 56 countries. Its tires division, accounting for 34% of revenue, has a strong commitment to sustainability, aiming to use 100% sustainable materials by 2050.

Founded in 1871 in Hanover, Germany, Continental has evolved over the decades to become a key player in the automotive industry. The company began with the production of horse hoof pads before entering the tire sector. With a turnover of 41.4 billion euros in 2023 and nearly 200,000 employees spread across 56 countries, Continental is today positioned among the world leaders in the sector.

The tire division: a commitment to sustainability

Continental’s tire division plays a key role in this dynamic, representing 34% of the group’s total turnover. This division is divided into several segments: original equipment, replacement in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC), replacement in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), as well as replacement in the Americas and specialized tires for two wheels and super large tires.

The Europe, Middle East and Africa director of the replacement tires business area, Ferdinand Hoyos, highlighted that the automotive sector represents 49% of Continental’s turnover, while the tires division follows with 34%, of which 52% come from EMEA, 14% from APAC and 34% from the Americas. The Group, well anchored in Europe, aspires to further develop its sales in markets outside Europe, indicated Mr. Hoyos who spoke during a meeting with the Moroccan press organized on Monday, October 14.

Continental is firmly committed to safer and more sustainable mobility. The Hannover development center, where 1,000 scientists, designers and engineers work, is at the heart of innovation. Each new tire must go through several rigorous phases of research and development before reaching mass production, thus guaranteeing safety, performance and customer satisfaction, we read in a group press release.

Innovations for a sustainable future

Continental’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in ambitious goals. The company aims to achieve 100% sustainable materials in its products by 2050, with more than 40% recycled or renewable materials by 2030. In 2023, the launch of the UltraContact NXT, the most sustainable tire to this day, testifies to this desire. “Made of up to 65% renewable and recycled materials, it has already won several awards, including the Sustainability Award at the Swiss Automotive Show Innovation Awards 2023 and the German Innovation Award 2024”specifies the press release.

Continental, leading supplier to Renault and Stellantis factories in Tangier and Kenitra

Regionally, Morocco stands out as Continental’s main market in North Africa. The Group is the leading supplier, by far, of tires for the Renault and Stellantis factories in Tangier and Kenitra. Thanks to strong partnerships, Continental’s sales in the region have seen an impressive growth of almost 70% over the past ten years. The future prospects seem particularly promising, particularly with investment projects linked to the 2030 World Cup, concludes the group’s press release.
