The management of the Vetropack group presented the first “key elements” of the social plan intended for the staff of the St-Prex glassworks (VD), which will be closed this summer. Severance pay, bonuses and early retirement benefits are among the measures.

The company also plans to set up a support service for people affected by layoffs, in order to help them in their job search, indicates a press release released on Friday. Vetropack management made its announcements Thursday, during two meetings with St-Prex staff.

Staff and union representatives also attended these meetings, says Vetropack. Discussions around the social plan were held Thursday afternoon between the different parties. Further discussions are planned for next week.

Closing at the end of August

The staff meetings were organized after the announcement on Tuesday of the closure of the St-Prex site, scheduled for the end of August. For management, the factory can no longer be profitable. The vast majority of jobs, 182 positions, will go down the drain.

At the beginning of March, Vetropack activated a consultation procedure on the future of the Vaud factory. Staff representatives presented their alternative proposals to closure to management at the end of April. They described their application as “economically solid and ecologically innovative”, proposing, among other things, the adoption of glass fusion technology by oxy-combustion connected to an oxygen generator. This proposal was rejected by the group’s management.
