The situation before 13/10 in Wervik

Mayor: Youro Casier (Forward)

Majority

Forward: 33.5 percent (9 seats)

CD&V: 24.5 percent (6 seats)

Opposition

Team 2030: 26.6 percent (7 seats)

N-VA: 15.4 percent (3 seats)

Participating parties on 13/10: CD&V, N-VA, Team 2030, Vlaams Belang, Vooruit

Vooruit was the big winner in 2018, with one seat gain compared to six years previously. The socialists decided to join forces with the Stadslijst – a cartel between Open VLD, Groen and Positive Project – which could also call itself a winner with seven seats. A special collaboration, because it was agreed that each party would have a mayor. Youro Casier for four years for Vooruit, followed by Bert Verhaeghe, the Open VLD member of the City List, for another two years. Would, because the change didn’t happen.

With a vote of no confidence, CD&V, together with Vooruit, found themselves in the majority. Remarkable, because for a long time Vooruit could not go through the same door as the Wervik Christian Democrats – which often resulted in open bickering and strong blows below the belt. It was the start of a feud between red and blue, with open bickering and serious stabs below the belt. N-VA watched it with dismay, but continued to put up brave opposition.

If it depends on Bert Verhaeghe of Team 2030, the Wervikans have an easy choice. It’s Forward or change, and for that change they better vote for his party. Vooruit is strong in the red bastion that is Wervik.

But the proverb about two dogs and their bone can also be true here. How does CD&V score, which lost two seats in 2018 and was thus forced into opposition again? How does N-VA score after the good result in June? With three parties that were part of the majority, they are the only ones that cannot be held accountable for the achievements and the political bickering. The input from Vlaams Belang will also be important. There was no list in 2018, so it is time to see whether they will get a seat and if so, which party they will steal it from.
