The billionaire arrived in the Chinese capital on Sunday for his second visit in less than a year to China, the world’s largest automobile market.

Elon Musk met with senior Chinese officials, including Prime Minister Li Qiang, to ensure the sustainability of his business in the country. It already enjoys great popularity with a middle class fond of electric cars.

The day before, models manufactured in China by Tesla were officially included on the list of vehicles meeting national data security requirements. This is the removal of a major regulatory obstacle.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) had said it had been testing vehicles since November 2023, with the help of a national IT security regulator, to check how they collected and processed data.

The tests included personal information and recordings of faces outside the car.

“Among them, 76 models from six companies (BYD, Li Auto, Lotus, Hozon Auto, Tesla and NIO) meet the four automotive data security compliance requirements,” CAAM said in its statement on Sunday.

The Model 3 and Model Y, produced in Tesla’s Shanghai mega-factory, are on this list.

Tesla would also be close to a green light from the authorities to use its assisted driving technology in China, thanks to a partnership with the local internet giant Baidu for maps and navigation, according to the Bloomberg agency.
