Canada’s main stock index fell on Monday, while U.S. markets were mixed, awaiting major economic reports to be released in the coming days.

“It’s definitely one of those Mondays where the markets are treading water and will start to swim a little faster in one direction or another later in the week,” said Craig Fehr, head of investment strategy at Edward Jones.

The markets are in “wait and see” mode, he continued.

This week, several major economic data will be released. These include monthly reports on consumer price inflation and wholesale price inflation. Markets will be trying to determine when the US Federal Reserve might start cutting interest rates.

In Canada, where the economy has cooled more quickly, interest rate reductions could occur as early as June.
