UNUSUAL – Attacked by a gang of otters. If this sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, it is unfortunately a true story. A woman jogging in Perdana Park in Malaysia, found herself facing eight beasts. Rather harmless at first, but hungry, they threw themselves on her and bit her several times.

Located in the city of Kota Kinabalu in the state of Sabah, Perdana Amusement Park is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Tanjung Aru sub-district. On the morning of Wednesday, September 11, eight wild otters were filmed roaming around there as shown in the video aboveA few minutes earlier, they had attacked a jogger, who was found covered in blood on her arms and legs after multiple bites.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Roland Oliver Niuin told Reuters that preliminary investigations revealed the otters had come looking for food near the park’s pond. A wildlife protection team was quickly sent to check on them, but they had already fled.

Park blames visitors

This is not the first time that wild otters have entered the park grounds. But a change in behavior has occurred recently, according to the director. The reason? The food provided by tourists. “There is indeed a population of wild otters near the park, and we have seen a change in the animal’s behavior since the community started feeding them.” confirmed the director of the Sabah wildlife department.

The fence has been reinforced, while management has advised the population to avoid contact with the animals and to stay away from the barriers. “We also asked the staff to tell us if they still spot any after the repairs.”

This is not the first time that an incident of this type has occurred in this park. A visitor had already been assaulted and hospitalized because of a similar attack according to Reuters. According to conservationists interviewed by our colleagues, otters are not generally aggressive but can become so if they feel attacked or when they are looking for food.
