Hubert de Bouärd: “Bordeaux wines must listen to consumers”

The co-owner of Château Angélus in St-Emilion and consulting oenologist Hubert de Bouärd gives us his vision of the world of wine and questions the communication of Bordeaux wines. According to him, it must better correspond to the desires of consumers and to the times

Hubert de Bouärdco-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Emilion recounts his passion intact after 40 vintages. A winegrower who grew up among the family vineyards of Château Angelus in Saint-Émilion, Hubert de Boüard is above all a man nourished by his childhood spent among the vineyards, and whose philosophy can be summed up in a few words: balance and respect for people and of nature. He was 7 years old when his father gave him his first pruning shears to go prune the vines. His vacations are spent working in the vineyards and cellars of the region. Oenologist graduated from the Faculty of Bordeaux, his teachers are called Emile PeynaudJohn and Pascal Ribereau Gayon. His weekends are spent working in the vineyards of Château Thieuley at La Sauve or on the island of Patiras opposite Pauillac. He did his first internships at Château Figeac with Thierry Manoncourt, in Saint-Émilion, in Beaujolais and in Burgundy. Early 80s: thanks to Michel Bettane, he discovered Burgundy, met Henri Jayer, Denis Mortet, Dominique Lafon… He then understood that viticulture is part of respecting the environment and oenological practices linked to common sense (working the soil, gently extracting polyphenols , breeding on lees, etc.) and scientific reasoning. Upon returning in 1985, he took responsibility for the Angelus family estate. In 2001, he founded his oenology laboratory which today advises and supports more than 80 properties in France and around the world.
