In Louvain, activists demonstrate in front of a BNP Paribas agency: they denounce the practices of the bank which would finance an “ecocide”

A group of activists carried out a fist-fighting action in front of a BNP Paribas Fortis bank branch on Saturday in Louvain, Flemish Brabant, to denounce the links between the multinational and the fossil fuel industry. The activists tried to convince passers-by to withdraw their money from this bank “which finances ecocide and genocide”.

The action came from several NGOs including the environmental organization Extinction Rebellion, the Louvanist action group for Palestine, Grand Parents for the Climate, Greenpeace, and Fairfin.

The activists practiced the “Die-in”, a collective action of symbolic protest during which they lie down on the public highway to represent the victims of ecocide and the “ongoing genocide in Gaza”, which the bank finances indirectly, according to them.

“After the Paris climate agreement, BNP Paribas did not gradually eliminate its investments in the fossil fuel industry. On the contrary, it increased them,” points out Hadewijch Verhenne, communications manager. “In six years, the company has invested nearly $166 billion in fossil fuel companies. It’s a catastrophe: the BNP bank is thus contributing to ecocide,” she maintains.

The demonstrators also highlighted the role played by BNP Paribas Fortis in the devastating conflict in the Gaza Strip. “BNP is investing in British Petroleum and the Italian company Eni,” said Ms Verhenne. “Israel has issued these two companies with a gas exploration license off the Gaza coast. The game is rigged. In this way, BNP Paribas Fortis is sponsoring a genocide.”
