Will Biden’s hubris cost him the White House?

“Voters, by a large majority, trust Trump more on the economy. That’s what the polls say, and part of that can be explained by the numbers,” CNN reporter Erin Burnett told Joe Biden on Wednesday before mentioning the rising cost of housing and falling real incomes of Americans. “With less than six voters, are you worried that you will run out of time to turn things around? »

“We have already rectified the situation,” replied the president. “Look at the Michigan Survey: 65% of respondents think their economic situation is good. Polls are constantly wrong. You are doing a poll at CNN. How many people do you have to call to get an answer? »

If we are to believe David Axelrod, Barack Obama’s former strategist, this response explains not only Biden’s delay in the polls on the question of the economy but also the danger that awaits him next November.

It is true that the economy has improved since Biden arrived at the White House, Axelrod recognizes.

“But that’s not how people experience the economy,” he said during an intervention broadcast on CNN after the Biden interview. “They experience it through the prism of the cost of living. [Biden] is a man who built his career on empathy, why not start with empathy? I think he’s making a terrible mistake. If he doesn’t win this race, it may not be Donald Trump who will beat him, but his own pride. »

In other words, Biden should recognize the feelings expressed by Americans and reflected in polls rather than denying their reality out of hubris. Axelrod’s opinion is not gospel. But the question that covers this post arises.
