Take a hot bath at 40°C while enjoying a pint of beer in Lyon. This is the whole concept of the Holy Hop beer-spa which opened at the end of April 2024 in the historic and tourist district of Vieux-Lyon.
Margot Marchand and Dorian Pacault, a young Savoyard couple, brought back this extraordinary experience from their trip to Prague. In the Czech Republic, these traditional baths where beer ingredients are poured are famous. Increasingly known in Paris, they hope that the concept will appeal.
Beer ingredients added to the bath
The bath itself is not just done in hot water. The ingredients used to ferment the beer are added. Yes, you read correctly. Hops, brewer’s yeast and malt powder are mixed inside. Ready to slide in?
“There is no no smell and it doesn’t stick,” reassures the couple, visibly used to this type of question. “Hops are an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Malt is rich in vitamins, it makes the skin softer and smoother. Brewer’s yeast has a strengthening effect on nails, hair and skin,” they specify.
A liter of beer each
The owners of the premises guarantee the benefits. These wooden baths are accompanied by two beer taps. “Each customer is entitled to a liter of beer during their relaxation hour,” says the young couple.
And it’s not just any beer. There is the choice between Princesse Pale Ale from Brasserie Georges, a renowned Lyon brewer, and Fruitage de Rodenbach, a Dutch brewery.
Two rooms, two atmospheres to relax
The premises are divided into two rooms. In the first, there are two baths, the beer tap (of course), a sauna (optional) and a straw bed. “Lying down in a bed of straw allows you to relax and we put a sheet so that it doesn’t sting,” smiles the couple.
The second room also has two baths, the beer tap, but is focused on a playful side with a darts board and a cozy space to play a board game. Everyone will find the atmosphere they like. “Couples like this one,” they tell us.
109 euros per hour for two
A shower is also available in both rooms, as well as bathrobes. The experience still costs 109 euros per hour for two, with the choice of whether or not to share the bath. The two pints of beer are included in the price and the rooms are completely private.
“A liter per person is not bad. Even if in Prague, it’s all you can eat because there is not the same legislation as in France,” laughs Dorian. A hot bath, cold beer… the concept has everything to seduce the Lyonnais. “We believe in it,” the owners tell us.
