Some 200 people rushed to Saint-Hyacinthe on Saturday to support an equine dentist in his legal battle with the Order of Veterinary Physicians.

Patrick Chartrand, who has been taking care of the dental care of many horses for 25 years, could soon see his career sabotaged.

The Court of Quebec recently ruled in favor of the Order of Veterinary Physicians which asserts that Mr. Chartrand does not have the right to practice his profession.

The equine dentist intends to appeal this court decision and many clients demonstrated on Saturday with the wish that Patrick Chartrand be able to continue to practice his profession.

The latter is mainly concerned with filing, or “grating”, the horses’ teeth. He maintains that his practice is safe for animals and that he does not use any form of anesthesia.

“I have veterinary owners who have horses and I do their own horses’ teeth. I don’t tranquilize the horses, I hardly give them any medication. It’s an interview. The horse must have its teeth ground, between two and five years old, twice a year. After five years, (it’s) once a year. It’s something that grows continuously, so they have to be filed down,” explains Patrick Chartrand.

Several of the horse owners who do business with Mr. Chartrand were keen to emphasize the quality of his work.

Here are some of the reactions collected by our journalist:

“Patrick has been taking care of my horses’ teeth for about 10 years. Of course, I also call my veterinarian if necessary, working as a team. What’s really important is the well-being of the animal.”

“As a horse owner, I want to offer – like my children – the best. And for me, for the best, my choice is Patrick Chartrand.”

“There’s nothing chemical. Not everyone wants to put their horses to sleep and get the same treatment. Basically, a veterinarian, for our dogs, does not tell us where to go to have him groomed. So why does he tell us where to go to have our teeth grated?”
