Absenteeism at work had not been as low as in 2023 for five years, according to the latest barometer on the subject from Acerta published on Friday. On average, workers were actually present for 83% of their working time, or 208 days for full time.

This level of productivity has “never been so high in recent years“, according to the barometer. It recorded an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to 2022, which was the first year in which productivity had again reached its pre-pandemic level. “In other words, less time was spent on sick leave, vacation, career breaks and temporary unemployment last year“, comments Acerta.

The main reason for absence remained illness: an average of 7.9% of working time (19.7 days for full time) was not worked for this reason. Next came vacations (6.3% of working time), career interruptions or time credits (3.2%) and finally temporary or economic unemployment (0.4%).

Acerta notes that “absence due to illness is clearly more problematic in large companies than in SMEs”. According to its data, the problem is even twice as important: 9.9% of absence time in large companies compared to only 5% in small and medium-sized ones. “Since it would seem illogical to say that small companies recruit healthier people than large ones, or that there are automatically more health risks in large companies than in small ones, the cause (and therefore the solution) must be sought within companies individually“, notes Amandine Boseret, legal expert at Acerta.

According to a survey, three elements are essential to feeling good at work: sufficient autonomy, a feeling of involvement and the certainty of having the skills necessary to accomplish your tasks. “Companies struggling with a high rate of absenteeism would therefore have every interest in analyzing these three components within themselves.“, she concludes.
