The Casino brand is almost over. In shopping areas across France, it will now be impossible to see the supermarket’s red lettering on storefronts. The brand, overwhelmed by debt, has been forced to sell all of its approximately 300 hypermarkets and supermarkets.

By September 30 and October 5, 2024, 22 stores must permanently close their doors. Three of them must be taken over. The list, which signs the final end of societywas communicated by Casino to actu.fr.

300 stores sold

In total, the Casino group has sold more than 300 stores in hypermarket and supermarket formats. In 2024, 164 stores were sold to Intermarché (Groupement les Mousquetaires), 96 stores to Auchan and 18 stores to its Corsican subsidiary, Rocca. Finally, 23 stores were sold to Carrefour.

As a reminder, in October 2023, the Casino group had already announced the sale of 61 stores to Intermarché, as we had already written.

“Very hard for employees”

The Job Protection Plan (PSE), announced by the group in April 2024, has left its mark. “It was very hard for employees who moved from Casino at Intermarché,” he confides to actu.fr a trade unionist.

For “employees” who have not been taken on by a competing brand, “from new times of exchanges are planned, in order to inform them about the PSE support measures,” the group indicates.

The group is playing for time for the last stores that are closing, they do not want to inform the employees of the stores without buyers that, in fact, they have nothing.

Proof that the group is still looking for buyers for the dozens and dozens of remaining brands: “if takeover opportunities were to emerge before or after the end of September, These would of course be studied with care,” assures Casino.
