(Ecofin Agency) – The historic operator Ethio Telecom is seeking to consolidate its position on the national telecommunications market in the face of growing competition. To achieve this, it is investing in strategic infrastructure, including data centers.

Ethiopia’s state-owned telecommunications operator Ethio Telecom announced on Monday, September 23, that it will contract China’s Shandong Hi-Speed ​​Group Co. Ltd to build its next hyperscale data center. Frehiwot Tamru (pictured, right), CEO of Ethio Telecom, has initiated discussions with Cal Kun, CEO of Shandong Hi-Speed ​​Group, to this effect.

Shandong expressed its willingness to collaborate with Ethio Telecom in the construction and financing of the data center, forming a strategic partnership to advance Ethiopia’s digital infrastructure. “, Ethio Telecom said on X.

This initiative is fully in line with the operator’s growth strategy, focused on finding partners to accelerate the country’s digital transformation. The data center project aims to support the digital infrastructures already in place by Ethio Telecom, including its latest center inaugurated in 2022.

This new hyperscale center is distinguished by its capacity to host thousands of computing resources and by the scalability and performance of the services it will provide. By leveraging such infrastructure, Ethio Telecom aims to strengthen its role in providing cutting-edge digital services in Ethiopia, in line with the government’s vision of making the country a digital nation.

Furthermore, Ethio Telecom recently unveiled its development plan for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, targeting a 6% increase in its subscriber base, reaching a total of 83 million users. At the same time, the company aims to generate a revenue of 163.7 billion Birr (approximately $1.4 billion) during the same period.

These ambitious goals are supported by strategic investments in digital infrastructure such as the hyperscale data center, designed to support the growth in demand for telecommunications services in Ethiopia.
