PwC Sustainability Awards: Companies can do better

PwC Mauritius rewarded, on September 17, Mauritian companies that distinguished themselves in terms of sustainable development in seven categories. This was during the second edition of the PwC Sustainability Awards, at the House of Digital Art, in Port-Louis.

In the Logistics category, Velogic won the prize. In Agro-industry, Omnicane came out on top. ENL Property came first in the Construction and Real Estate category. Batimex Ltd dominated the Retail sector. Sofap Ltd won in the Manufacturing sector. Sunlife Hotel Management Ltd won in Tourism and Mauritius Commercial Bank dominated the Financial Services sector. A Special Jury Prize went to Morivert Co Ltd.

The jury consisted of four independent professionals who evaluated the candidates’ performance based on performance indicators for the company’s impact, its sense of innovation, how its strategy fits into sustainable development and especially in relation to the submission of data.

“This year there have been positive initiatives in sustainable development and many participants have implemented strategies. However, progress still needs to be made,” said Julien Tyack, partner at PwC Mauritius and Sustainability Leader, during the awards ceremony. For him, sustainable development is not yet integrated into strategies, even if it is taking up more and more space in company structures. “Although progress has been made in adopting data dissemination principles, most companies do not fully apply them,” laments Julien Tyack. This is particularly the case, according to him, for the issue of gender equality, with companies that have no clear objectives or do not communicate data on the subject.

The message is clear, too. We can only hope that at the third edition of the PwC Sustainability Awards, significant progress will have been made in these areas.
