Immigration – “France Info” had explained, a few hours earlier, that Michel Barnier was considering the creation of a Ministry of Immigration

Prime Minister Michel Barnier is not considering creating a ministry specifically dedicated to Immigration, Matignon indicated on Monday. Earlier, France Info had stated that he was considering “the return of a Ministry of Immigration”. This title has not existed within the Government since 2010. The Ministry of Immigration – and of “National Identity”, according to the title at the time – was created in 2007 under the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy. Its two holders were Brice Hortefeux then Eric Besson.

The head of government “is wary of announcements and wants to treat the subject of immigration seriously,” his services asserted. “On the method, as on the outlines of this very important policy for the French, he is thinking about the most effective means to obtain results,” it was added.

Barely appointed, Mr. Barnier had cited, on Friday, among his priorities, the “control of migratory flows”. At the end of 2021, during his campaign for the Republican primary for the 2022 presidential election, he had defended very firm positions on this subject, notably proposing a “moratorium” on immigration and the tightening of the criteria for family reunification.
