Light survey – the newspaper – TVA: fearful in front of Donald Trump’s prices, Quebecers also want to punish Amazon

Donald Trump’s pricing threats are likely to hurt our economy, fear most Quebecers, who in an impetus of anger, plan to boycott Amazon or make less purchases, reveals a light survey –The newspaper–TVA.

According to a probe conducted with a thousand Quebecers, a large majority of the population (83 %) believes that the Quebec economy will suffer from possible 25 % customs tariffs imposed by the American president.

Among them, more than half say that these prices will make our economy “very badly”. There is almost no one (1 %) to say that the effect will be zero if Donald Trump puts his threat.

The preservatives of Eric Duhaime more skeptical

Men, women, young people, not so young: “In all the sub-groups of the population, people believe that it will be negative,” notes the sounder Jean-Marc Léger.

Except perhaps among the supporters of Eric Duhaime, where one in four conservative voter predicts that President Trump’s prices would have none, if not little effect for the Quebec economy.

Otherwise, almost all of the sympathizers caquists, liberals, pouquists and solidarity expect these customs taxes to do badly.

All parties combined, it is in the National Capitale that the highest level of concern (89 % in the large Quebec region compared to 80 % in the metropolis, and 85 % in other regions) was measured by Light, last weekend. President Trump then confirmed the taxation of prices of 25 % against Canada and Mexico, before finally granting a 30 -day stay on Monday.

Angry against Amazon

The closure of Amazon warehouses in Quebec also goes wrong with Quebecers: 54 % of people surveyed by slight plan to boycott Amazon or make less purchase. The boycott option is envisaged by one in five Quebecers.

“Again, we are in intention. Are they going to do it or not? We will see in the coming weeks, ”notes Mr. Léger.

Until the announcement of nearly 1,500 layoffs by Amazon in Quebec, in addition to 2,500 additional job losses with its partners, Quebecers were regulars of the JEFF Bezos billionaire platform: 91 % of respondents say they have already made purchases there. “It’s quite phenomenal,” considers the sounder.
