The equator announces customs tariffs against Mexico

(Quito) The Conservative President of the Ecuador announced on Monday that he was going to increase customs duties on Mexican imports, a measure that echoes the prices announced by US President Donald Trump against Mexico, but which were then suspended.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa said on Monday that 27 % customs duties that will be applied to Mexican products aimed to stimulate local industry. But the conservative leader could also seek Washington favors, where the Trump administration said on Saturday that she would impose her own customs duties 25 % in Mexico.

Mr. Trump and Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that the new prices would be suspended for the moment in order to give the two parties more time to negotiate. President Trump demanded that Mexico do more to combat illegal immigration and fentanyl traffic across the border.

Mr. Noboa, who took leave of a re -election campaign to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump last month in Washington, praised the victory of the American president as a victory for Latin America.

The advertisement of the equator intervenes in a context of separate and bitter diplomatic conflict between the South American country and Mexico, which broke its diplomatic relations last year after the Ecuadorian police broke into the embassy of the Mexico to arrest the former Ecuadorian vice-president Jorge Glas.

The equator’s decision was largely condemned as a violation of international law, while the equator argued that Mr. Glas was sought for fraud and not for political reasons. The Ecuadorian state accused Mexico of having illegitimately granted it political asylum in the diplomatic complex.

Trade between the two countries are however minimal, representing less than 1 % of the total exports of Mexico, according to data from the Mexican central bank.

Mr. Noboa, heir to a fortune in banana, presents himself in the elections on Sunday for his first complete constitutional mandate after being elected 18 months ago to complete the aborted mandate of former president Guillermo Lasso.
