Israeli-Palestinian conflict – This expression, regularly used in demonstrations of support for the Palestinians, is subject to several interpretations

It is a phrase regularly used in demonstrations of support for Palestinians since the start of the war in Gaza. The slogan “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” will not be censored on the Facebook, Instagram and Threads platforms, the Meta Oversight Board explained on Wednesday.

The phrase, which refers to a territory stretching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea – including Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip – has been interpreted in several ways. Some see it as a call for equal rights between Israelis and Palestinians. Others see it as an anti-Semitic call for the eradication of Israel.

“No calls for violence or exclusion”

Meta’s supervisory board, which is the authority on moderating content on the group’s social networks, believes that there is “no call for violence” in this expression. It seized on three examples of use of the expression on Facebook to justify its decision. In each of the cases studied, it judged that they did not go against the platform’s regulations on hate speech, incitement to violence, as well as individuals or organizations in(…) - 20minutes
