The Blu-ray is endangered, and Sony has just driven a new nail into the format coffin.
The Japanese company Sony published this week a laconic and simple declaration this week, clearly indicating that it would no longer make recordable Blu-ray records from February. Minidv cassettes, recordable Minidiscs and MD-Data discs will also be officially abandoned next month.
Keep in mind that Sony will no longer produce Blu-ray discs recordable . The standard Blu-ray discs used by retailers to sell films, games and other supports will always be produced, so that the format is not yet in the process of extinction. On the other hand, Sony will cease to produce new recordable Blu-ray discs that consumers could use to store data themselves (that is, discs on which it is possible to engrave supports or data).
-This decision is the last in a long series of manufacturers who are disinterested in physical supports. LG announced that it no longer manufactures or sell Blu-ray readers in December 2024. Sony still manufactures Blu-ray readers (just like a small handful of other equipment manufacturers), but physical supports seem to be at the end of the race . Given the rapid development of multimedia streaming and the fact that consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S regularly evolve towards streaming, the disappearance of physical supports such as Blu-ray should not be a great surprise.
Consumers can still buy Blu-ray records recordable from companies like Verbatim, which sell different storage sizes on Amazon (for example, a spindle of 50 GB discs, currently $ 41.90 on Amazon). However, it is impossible to know how long these discs will be available; It seems that most users opt for external hard drives and similar devices (which are not subject to scratches or other environmental risks) rather than for optical supports for the storage of their data.
