For the first time in 20 years, Marc Levy does not appear in the list of greatest book sellers

In 2023, she was already the first woman to dominate the ranking of French-speaking authors who sold the most books. Melissa Da Costa achieves the feat of retaining its place in 2024 in this list produced by the institute GfK. It confirms, with more than 1,162,000 copies sold last year. It is closely followed by Guillaume Musso (1,104,096 copies), who had not published anything new in 2023. These are the only two authors to exceed one million copies. The author of new romance Morgane Moncomble completes the podium.

Next come Virginie Grimaldi (946,787 copies), Joel Dicker (863,740 copies), Franck Thilliez (689,112 copies), Marie-Bernadette Dupuy (540,967 copies), Sarah Rivens (540,628 copies), Valérie Perrin (528,292 copies) and Michel Bussi (525,478 copies).

These ten authors alone have sold nearly 7.9 million books in 2024, or 17% of the total books sold over the year. A phenomenon of concentration on a few authors which accelerated this year, since in 2023, the top 10 authors had sold “only” 7.3 million books.

Romance everywhere

Another lesson: women still dominate the charts. There are six of them, like last year. They are especially very young. Mélissa Da Costa is 34 years old, Morgane Moncomble, third in the ranking, is only 28 years old. And Sarah Rivens? 25 years! The Algerian who publishes in French has become the figurehead of “dark romance”, a sort of anti-Harlequin with slightly trashy sentimental relationships.

A first since 2004: the successful French writer Marc Levy does not appear in the ranking. The novelist, who has long been in the lead, was even the only one to appear there for twenty years. However, he continues to write at a sustained pace. In 2023, he published his thriller The Symphony of Monsters. Last November, he also released The library of banned books. Would the public have grown tired of Levy?
