Here is a selection of literary gems to discover this month.
Two naked girls / Luz
Luz’s new comic strip is astonishing: the point of view adopted throughout the story is in fact that of a painting entitled Two Naked Girls, painted by Otto Mueller in 1919.
Divided into five parts, the narrative follows the passage of time between 1919 and 2001. The avant-garde movement of the 1920s in Germany, the support of collectors for artists at the beginning of the 20th century, Nazi censorship, the spoliation of property Jews and their restitution, all this is told with the vigorous and striking style of Luz and her art of narration. A most beneficial comic book, recommended from 14 years old.
Éditions Albin Michel – October 2, 2024 – 196 pages – €24.90
The theory of waves/ Pascale Chouffot
Skillfully mixing a series of murders on young girls, all committed in Chalon-sur-Saône, with the ancient history of an old house lost in the depths of the Morvan sheltering poor kids placed there by Public Assistance, Pascale Chouffot composes an original social thriller, a dive into the dark secrets of a provincial town. We were totally won over by the main characters, a lawyer who pursues difficult cases and a traumatized former cop. An author to follow!
Éditions du Rouergue – March 2024
432 pages – 23 €
Ulysses and Cyrano / Antoine Cristau and Xavier Dorison, illustrations Stéphane Servain
Paris 1952: Ulysse prepares for his Baccalaureate
and complies with the demands of his parents as a worthy heir to the flourishing family business. Is he happy though? Following his mother to Burgundy, he discovers thanks to Cyrano, a former starred chef, that cooking chicken and crayfish is much more exciting than solving math exercises. The scenario is rich in twists and turns and the drawing, generous and dynamic, is just as brilliant as the story. A comic book full of emotions and a real pleasure to read.
