The Most Precious of Goods, a Tale (2019) was crowned with numerous prizes: special jury prize for the Prix des Libraires, L’Express/BFM TV Readers’ Prize, Paris winner for the Literary Prize for high school students, apprentices and professional training interns from the Île-de-France region… Jean-Claude Grumberg also received in 2019 the Grand Prize from the Société des gens de lettres for his entire artwork.
By writing this text in the form of a tale, Grumberg has achieved something powerful and unforgettable. With a simple, concise story, he knew how to recreate the unthinkable, the unimaginable. He gives us a summary of all the atrocities, inhumanity and madness of which men have been capable.
But there is also and this is the strength of this tale, this magnificent love story that Jean-Claude Grumberg renders with so much beauty and poetry, poetry concentrated in this title where a child becomes “The most precious of goods “.
In 2024, Jean-Claude Grumberg’s tale is adapted for the cinema by Michel Hazanavicius. The director himself drew the characters for his animated film. A choice of original drawings, taken from his work notebooks, accompanies this new edition of The Most Precious of Goods.
