Book and manuscript: what is the most expensive book in the world? In 2023, a generous patron acquired a Hebrew Bible for a record $38.1 million. This precious work, known as the Sassoon codex in homage to its owner David Solomon Sassoon (d. 1942), was acquired by former American ambassador and philanthropist Alfred Moses and his family. In collaboration with the American Friends of the ANU — Museum of the Jewish People, this manuscript was generously donated to the Tel Aviv Museum. This acquisition thus represents a historic record for a handwritten book, which also shows the commitment of patrons to the preservation and promotion of Jewish cultural heritage.

The number one book in the world in terms of fame and circulation is undoubtedly the Bible. In fact, it is the best-selling and most-read book in the history of humanity. However, if we talk about monetary value, the book that has previously reached records is Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Leicester. Acquired by Bill Gates for $30.8 million in 1994, it held the previous record for most expensive book, before the Codex Sassoon sale in 2023. Other , such as a first edition of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer or an original edition of the works of William Shakespeare, also fetch considerable sums at auction.
