Skiing in Switzerland – A history
From the dawn of Swiss skiing to the exploits of its champions, this work traces the history of a sport which shapes the identity of the country and unites generations.
Hedy Schlunegger, Bernhard Russi, Marco Odermatt, Vreni Schneider and other key figures in Swiss alpine skiing are essential heroes in the history of sport in Switzerland. They symbolize the collective imagination linked to events like the 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz, those of 1972 in Sapporo or the 1987 World Championships in Crans-Montana, as well as emblematic places like Zermatt, St. Moritz, Mürren or Engelberg.
But the memories go well beyond the major international competitions: they are anchored in each person’s personal experiences, at the ski school or in family resorts. Skiing is a true national heritage, experienced on a daily basis, which goes beyond the simple sporting aspect. It has become a major social phenomenon and a political project supported by initiatives such as school camps or the promotion of tourism.
Since the birth of the first ski clubs in the 1890s, the creation of the national federation in 1904, until the emergence of the big names in skiing in the 1970s, Swiss skiing has established itself. Today, it faces climatic and environmental challenges, but remains the symbol of a nation of mountaineers that has become a nation of skiers.
