Change of identity for the Bacalan library
Open since 1964, the Bacalan library accompanied the changes in the neighborhood. Today considered obsolete and no longer meeting the needs of the inhabitants, it will be demolished and rebuilt in the same place. With this comes a name change from Bacalan library at the Bacalan Library – René Maranin homage to this French writer born in Martinique and winner of the 1921 Goncourt Prize.
The new equipment, designed by Bordeaux architect Nicole Concordet, will be three times larger, going from 430 to 1200 m2and will offer new spaces. Its opening is scheduled for fall 2026.

The project, co-constructed with residents, includes: workplaces, study room, video games, board games and toys, 30,000 books, comics and DVDs that can be borrowed for free for children and adults. Like a giant modern book tree, promoting sharing, meeting and access to culture.
The wooded structure, which aims to be exemplary on an environmental level, is based on the existing plant fabric and respects a demanding specifications in terms of eco-responsibility (natural ventilation thanks to a wind tower made of rammed earth, energy provided by geothermal energy and solar panels and maintenance of the existing plant fabric).
The first groundbreaking will begin in May 2025 and delivery of the new library Bacalan-René Maran is scheduled for October 2026. Throughout the duration of the work, a service outside the walls will be offered at the Cité Bleue at 182 rue Achard on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
